My new American flatmate is a biotechnologist by profession but he has come to Europe to work. He does not want to work in his profession so he is using his dance skills to earn a living. It is not going very well. This is a hard place to try to eek out a living. Poor young kid but I take my hat off to him. He goes out each day to look for salsa studios and dance schools to see if he can get some work. He got one permanent student - who has tuned out to be inconsistent - he cancels this week and then comes the next etc. So Leon made his own meet up group and tried to begin his own salsa classes.
He asked me to go along so I agreed to. I manged to find the place very easily and arrived on time. The studio is on the second floor of an apartment building. It is an old apartment which has been designed into a dance studio. There are pressed ceilings with intricate designs and patterns in the high ceilings. There are wooden floors throughout the place. It was a real surprise. I certainly did not expect to find a studio in a apartment building...
I am not the best dancer as I do not remember sequences very well and stress when I cannot do the right thing so my experience with dancing, this far has not been good. So I was not expecting to take part in the class but rather to watch and just talk to others.
There were not many people who actually turned up. There were 7 registered attendees and 14 maybes. It turned out only 2 came plus me. What a shame... Such a beautiful studio and two teachers for 2 students and one onlooker (me). My flatmate forced me to take part in the lesson so my two left feet had to take to the floor. Initially I felt like this would be a mountain to climb but in the end I seemed to manage to do a few of the steps and even do a turn!! My flatmate is a good teacher and his partner Rosa is a lot of fun - she made me believe that I could do this and would enjoy doing it. Lots of fun ! Then I met a Russian gal named Diana who is in Barcelona running a web based language company and Jordi who is a Spanish guy from Terassa. A fun time was had by all. Next week ? I am not sure...
